This Lenten project is a little box that we can use to open discussion and explain some of the symbols from the Passion story. The box can be used during Lent to put money for an offering at mass on Easter.
The silver coins remind us that Judas Iscariot agreed to betray Jesus to the chief priests for 30 pieces of silver. Then he watched for an opportunity to turn Jesus over when there was no crowd to protect him.
The palm branches remind us that when Jesus came to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover feast, people ran to meet him, with cut branches of palm trees, shouting, “Hosanna; Blessed is the King of Israel that comes in the name of the Lord.”
The wheat and bread remind us that at the Last Supper, Jesus took bread, broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”
The crown of thorns reminds us that Jesus was taken before Pilate who scourged him. Then the soldiers made a crown of thorns and placed it on Jesus’ head. They then dressed him in purple robes and pretended to worship him while they struck him and spit upon him.
The dice remind us that the soldiers who crucified Jesus threw dice to see who would get his clothes.
Supplies:
- White cardstock
- Lenten box (Pattern)
- Colored pencils
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Old pen or a stylus
- Glue stick
Directions:
- Print the Lenten box on white cardstock.
- Color with colored pencils or very fine tipped markers.
- Carefully cut out the box and then score all the dotted lines. Use an old ball point pen or a stylus to score the lines and make sure to use the ruler to keep the score straight.
- Apply glue to all the tabs except the tab on the lid. Press the tabs to the sides to form a box, making sure to keep the box square.

Hi Glitter Queen, I came across your fantastic Lenten Symbols Box by googling Lenten images. I’m thrilled to have found you! This will work perfectly for my first graders. They may need assistance with assembling it but they can do a decent job coloring it. Then it’ll make a great keepsake to talk about Lent at home with their families! God bless!
