Drawing Birds

We used calendar pictures of birds for inspiration in this project.  Before we started drawing we discussed proportion and placement.  Each student was given a bird picture to reference while we discussed the shape of the bird body (like a raindrop); the head size in comparison to the body size (can be different on different species); the angle and size of the beak; the length of the tail; and the angle of the legs.  The students then pencil drew the bird and comparable surroundings as the calendar picture.  They colored the birds with oil pastels and finished with a colored chalk background.  The kids were amazed at how beautiful  their art turned out.

Supplies:

  • White construction paper or drawing paper
  • Calendar pictures of birds
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Oil pastels
  • Colored chalk
  • Kleenex
  • Assorted colors of background paper.

Directions:

  1. After giving each student a bird picture, discuss proportion and placement.
  2. Draw a picture similar to the one on the bird picture.
  3. Draw whatever the bird is resting on.
  4. Color with oil pastels, mixing colors and blending.  Notice that the eye usually have a small white dash in them to give them life.
  5. Carefully stroke colored chalk around the bird and wipe with the Kleenex.
  6. Choose a colored sheet of construction paper to accent the drawing.
