Four Together

For this project we chose works of art by famous artists and made it a lesson on cooperation and working toward a common goal. Four students worked together choosing the art, the medium, and the colors used. We started with two copies of the art: one was cut into four pieces, the other left as a complete work. The art that was chosen are: “Parrot Family” by Alfred Gockel; “Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh;”Ile Saint Martin” by Claude Monet; “Meadow Dance” by Shirley Novak; “Goldfish” by Henri Mattise; and “The Lesson,” by Pablo Picasso.

Supplies:

  • Art works (two copies of each work of art)
  • White construction paper or watercolor paper
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Color medium (crayons, oil pastels, watercolor pencils, colored pencils)

Directions:

  1. Divide the class into groups of four. Each group chooses a work of art (have some printed out in advance to save class time), a color medium and the colors they will use.
  2. Each student in the group of four takes one of the four cut pieces. With the four cut pieces placed together and the four white sheets of paper placed together, each student makes lines on their white sheet that will help them know where the four pieces will join when completed.
  3. Lightly draw the part of the picture each is responsible for on their fourth of the picture.
  4. Color with the chosen medium.
  5. Join the finished pieces with a narrow black strip between each of the four pieces.
