The poem, Children Learn What They Live, by Dorothy Law Nolte is such a powerful lesson for anyone who touches the lives of children. We used words in the poem for towns on our map. This project, which uses old road maps for the background, stresses the importance of how everything we do points us in the direction of our ultimate destination, heaven.

Supplies:

  • Old road map
  • Blue construction paper (3 1/2″ x 6″)
  • White construction paper
  • Car shapes (Pattern)
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Colored markers
  • Black Sharpie
  • Scissors
  • Gold glitter glue

Directions:

  1. Cut a 12″ x 18″ background piece from a road map. Print the cars on the white paper.
  2. Cut a scalloped edge on one corner of the blue paper for the heavenly cloud.
  3. Draw windows, wheels, etc. in car shape.
  4. With the colored markers, color and decorate the cars. Use seven or more cars. Cut out the cars.
  5. With the black Sharpie, print trait words in for towns. Such as, Encouragement, Patience, Honesty, Truthfulness, Acceptance, Love, Faith, Friendliness, Tolerance, Appreciate, Confidence.
  6. In the cloud, write, Destination: HEAVEN. On the top right side of the background write: Life is a Journey.
  7. Glue the cars to the background, facing toward Heaven.
  8. Outline the word, HEAVEN, with the gold glitter glue. Make ray lines down onto the map. Dot each of the trait town dots with the gold glitter glue.
