At The Zoo with Yuko Lau

The elementary students won a contest put on by the Henry Doorly zoo in Omaha. The book reading contest had the students and teachers excited and determined to win. They really enjoyed their day at the zoo and I thought it would be fun and fitting to do a project with a zoo theme. I’ve admired Yuko Lau’s animal art, so we used her art as our inspiration and then added the zoo bars. The pictures were so cute that I almost changed my mind and skipped the bars—–we’ll probably do it that way next year.

Yuko Lau was born and raised in Japan. She went to college and received a degree in furniture design. She worked as a furniture designer for over 10 years. Her creativity has now turned to graphic arts. She says she wants to create art that people would love to live with. Supplies:

• White paper (cut 9″x9″)
• Pencil and eraser
• Crayons
• Black Sharpie
• Black construction paper for bars (cut 1/2″ wide)

Directions:

1. Using the picture as a guide, draw a large half faced animal.
2. Outline with the black Sharpie.
3. Color the drawing using the picture as a guide.
4. Cut bars (5) vertical and (2) bars horizontal for a caged look.
