American Indian Art

This is a very nice project for the 3rd grade that, with a little preparation, can be finished in an hour session. In order to keep this art project from taking too much class time, I prepared the brown grocery sacks before class. I did this by tearing off the handles, cutting the sacks down the seam and cutting the bottom out of the sack. Then I covered the sacks with warm water in the sink. When the paper was wet, I bunched up the paper and squeezed the water out. I laid the paper on a towel, rolled it up and squeezed out the excess. Then I laid the paper flat to dry. I pressed the paper to straighten it a bit—-we want to keep the leather look. First I tore the straight edges from around the sack. Then I tore the paper in pieces the size I wanted for the project. My papers measured between 8″ x 8″ and 8″ x 10.”

Supplies:

  • American Indian Art (Examples)
  • Prepared brown grocery sacks
  • Assorted colors of 9″ x 12″
  • Colored chalk
  • White color crayon
  • Colored Sharpies
  • Black Sharpie
  • Kleenex

Directions:

  1. Using the colored chalk, and starting in the center of the paper, use a light color in the center and gradually go darker. Like yellow, orange, and red. Wipe with the Kleenex to remove chalk dust. Finish by applying black chalk to the outside edges of the paper. Dust off the excess with a Kleenex.
  2. Draw an Indian symbol on the paper. Color the picture completely with a white crayon. This will make the colors brighter.
  3. Color the picture with the colored Sharpies. Only permanent markers will work.
  4. Outline the completed picture with the black Sharpie.
  5. Glue to a piece of colored construction paper.

You should change the word Indian to Native American. Indians arepeople from India. This is precisely why children fail to have the ability to distinguish between the two.
