Ladybug, Ladybug

I think ladybugs are fascinating little insects. This is an interesting fact about ladybugs. Different ladybugs have different numbers of spots. Some have no spots while some have as many as twenty four. The spots are with them all their life. They don’t get more spots as they get older, nor do they lose spots. This is a 1st grade project to improve cutting and gluing skills.

Supplies:

  • Black construction paper
  • Red construction paper
  • Tan construction paper
  • Two 1/4″ x 2 1/2″ black strips for antennae
  • Six 3/8″ x 2″ black strips for legs
  • Ladybug body and head (Pattern)
  • Ladybug shell (Pattern)
  • Two 3/8″ google eyes
  • Paper punch
  • Scraps of red and black paper
  • Black and red markers
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick

Directions:

  1. Cut out the ladybug body, head and shell pieces.
  2. Fold the red shell in half at the curved in areas.
  3. Glue the black head behind the black body circle.
  4. Glue the red shell over the black body, keeping the shell slightly lifted.
  5. Glue the google eyes on the head. Fold the antennae in diagonal accordian pleats. Glue to top of head.
  6. Fold the leg pieces in half and then fold each end up about 1/4″; glue one end of each of the strips under the body.
  7. With the paper punch, and using scraps of black paper, cut a bunch of dots. Glue the dots on the shell.
  8. Glue the ladybug to the top side of the tan background paper. Leave room at the bottom to write, “Ladybug, Ladybug, Fly away home.”
  9. With scraps of red and black, make a border around the tan paper.
  10. Write with the black marker. Trace along one side of the black with the red marker.
